Representations:
The representations of characters are important as they give
the audience a better understanding of who they are and their role within the
film. Also the audience would know what to expect from the characters during
the thriller if they stick to stereotypes. Representations are further
important because they provide guidelines of what characters will be like in
the film.
My thriller represents particular social groups because of
things like age, themes and stereotypes. For example all the characters were within
the age groups of 16 – 18 years which was also the age groups of our target
audience and the certificate we gave to our film. Our themes involved love,
torture, friendship and death. These themes were more likely to be better
understood by the age groups that were portrayed as the audience could relate
to friendship and love.
My media product representing particular social groups:
-Name: Jack
- Character role: ‘’Antagonist’’
- Age: 18
- Gender stereotype of role: male teenager, therefore his
characteristics are immature and spontaneous which is something that is
stereotypical of his age and gender
- Costume: all black jumper and bottoms to reflect evil characteristics
within the film
- Hair and makeup: normal hair
- Body language and facial expression: crouched back to
cause suspicion amongst the audience
-Body language - jumpy, crazy etc.
- Facial expression - constantly slightly smirking
- Represented as a victim who doesn’t care about anything
that is going on around him. All fun and games
- Role within the narrative: Turns up late to the meeting
point and scares everyone.
Erdem played the character Jack ‘’ antagonist’’ which turns
up late to the media production filming and scares the other characters within
the thriller. He portrayed the immature behaviour when he scares the other
members which shoes that he doesn’t care about anything that’s going on and
doesn’t take it seriously which shows that you could expect anything from him
which makes the audience alert every time he’s on the scene. In addition the
typical stereotype of the male antagonist was presented by Erdem when he first
enters the scene wearing all black which automatically makes the audience think
that he’s the antagonist.
-Name: Sam
-Character role: Nerd Age: 17
- Gender stereotype of role: typical male nerd into
technology and getting work done
- Costume: chinos (tack ups) cheeked shirt
-Hair and makeup: neat hair, combed
- Body language and facial expression:
-Body language - stiff posture to show he is nervous
- Facial expression - straight face
-Represented as a
typical nerd who is focused on his studies and seen as an easy target
A proficient understanding of representation here and how your choice of characters have been influenced by existing thriller products. Good general discussion on how the ages and gender of your characters reflect and address your social group. A deeper analysis on some of the choices made on your main characters too in regards to their role
