Research: Age certificates

The BBFC’s role - Their role is to protect the public from anything offensive or could cause any harm.  The BBFC’s role in the film industry is important as they provide public information to help viewers decide if the films suitable for them or not so they don’t make the wrong decision which will corrupt or harm anyone for example most

things that are rated pg is because the child needs to have a guardian or parent next to them to feel safe.

Different age certificates:

Rated film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. U films should be set within a positive moral frame work and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.

PG is general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. This rated film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older although parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

15

This rating could include some controversial elements to it, but on the whole, there shouldn’t be any discrimination, drugs may be touched upon however, not promoted.

12Life as we know it

This category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video work.

Material may touch upon criminal law and display criminal offence, violent or dangerous acts also illegal drug use may be shown.

These films have been given these age ratings for many different reasons such as violence , useage of drugs , bad language etc.

Things that inappropriate for 12 – sexual scenes, drugs, strong violence, threat and bad language

12 is a fairly new age rating that came as a result of Spiderman (2002) viewers argued that Spiderman was too violent for children had had a controversial narrative, so should not be given a PG rating. Therefore, the BBFC put this into place

Many of the most horrific thrillers tend to get the age certificate rating of 18 as they involve weapons, torture, rape, extreme violence etc. The BBFC ensure that these types of viewing are out of reach for the ages below as it can affect them in many ways.

In conclusion I have learned what types of things can affect the age certificates and what I need to ensure I add / don’t add into my own thriller, for example such as rape , extreme violence shouldn’t be given below a 18 and therefore I’m going to place my thriller with the age certificate of 18.

  1. Good information on the different age certificates with discussion on what each will and should contain.

    To improve;
-is age rating a legal requirement for films?
    -can't see your film images
-12A is a faily new agre rating, not 12
-many thrillers also get an age rating of 15, look into this and look at the content and sub-genres of these two thriller ratings
